Designer - Substation
The Designer - Substation supports the development and execution of substation design projects by performing routine 2D and 3D physical and/or Protection & Control (P&C) design activities. This role applies established design techniques, industry standards, and engineering practices to develop accurate, high-quality drawing packages for internal and client-facing deliverables. The Designer works under the direction of a Lead Designer and collaborates closely with engineers, designers, and drafting teams throughout the project lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support substation design projects from project inception through completion.
- Perform detailed 2D and/or 3D physical and Protection & Control (P&C) design and drafting activities.
- Utilize CAD and smart design software to develop and maintain substation design drawings.
- Prepare and update drawing packages, layouts, schematics, and other design documentation.
- Apply utility design standards, engineering practices, and project specifications to all design work.
- Research information using equipment catalogs, specifications, corporate standards, and other technical reference materials.
- Demonstrate knowledge of substation materials, equipment, components, and construction methods.
- Perform quality control reviews to ensure drawings and design deliverables meet established standards and project requirements.
- Take responsibility for the quality, accuracy, and completeness of assigned work.
- Learn and properly utilize document management systems and identify opportunities for process improvements.
- Communicate potential project issues, design challenges, and recommended solutions to project stakeholders.
- Collaborate effectively with engineers, Lead Designers, drafting teams, and other project personnel.
- Manage multiple assignments and priorities while meeting project schedules and deadlines.
- Travel for project-related site visits or assignments as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Associate degree in Drafting & Design or equivalent certification preferred; four-year Engineering Technology degree is a plus.
- Minimum 4 years of experience in the electric utility industry performing detailed CAD/design work for high-voltage substation projects.
- Experience in substation design and drafting disciplines strongly preferred.
- Additional experience may qualify candidates for a higher-level position.
- Proficiency with CAD and/or smart design platforms such as AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD Map 3D, Inventor, or Substation Design Suite (SDS) preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of CAD programs and drafting practices.
- Basic knowledge of major substation components, equipment, and materials.
- Understanding of the types of drawings and documentation required for construction of electrical substations.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and email applications.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Basic written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with coworkers and project stakeholders.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments, establish priorities, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to adapt to changing requirements and work effectively in situations involving ambiguity.
Travel Requirements:
- Minimal travel required, primarily for project-related site visits and field assignments.
Pay: $92K - 125K DOE
