HVAC Technician - Field Service
Location: Wood-Ridge, NJ
Pay: $33-$38/hour
Employment Type: Full-Time
Travel: Local travel to multiple commercial properties; company vehicle and tools provided
Schedule: Includes participation in an on-call rotation
We are seeking an experienced HVAC Technician to support commercial facilities throughout the Wood-Ridge, NJ area. This is a field-based position responsible for performing preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, service, and repair of commercial HVAC and building mechanical systems across multiple customer locations.
The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with package units, split systems, boilers, refrigeration components, HVAC controls, electrical troubleshooting, and general building maintenance. This position requires local travel between customer properties, and a company vehicle and tools are provided.
The technician will also participate in an on-call rotation to support customer service needs outside of regularly scheduled work when required.
Key Responsibilities- Perform preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance on commercial HVAC equipment and building systems.
- Troubleshoot and repair commercial package units, split systems, boilers, and associated mechanical equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance inspections, including:
- Inspecting and replacing belts and pulleys
- Cleaning and inspecting condensate drain lines
- Testing compressors, fan motors, and blower motors
- Inspecting burners and heat exchangers
- Testing HVAC safety and operational controls
- Troubleshoot and repair HVAC components including compressors, condensing units, circuit boards, contactors, motors, belts, pulleys, and refrigeration components.
- Perform basic repairs on steam and hot-water boiler systems.
- Diagnose airflow and ductwork-related issues.
- Properly handle refrigerants in accordance with EPA requirements.
- Identify and repair refrigerant leaks and perform copper brazing as needed.
- Understand and troubleshoot commercial HVAC controls and sequences of operation.
- Perform general facility maintenance, including minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drywall, and painting repairs.
- Complete scheduled work orders, service inspections, preventive maintenance tasks, and equipment/asset inspections.
- Maintain accurate service notes, inspection reports, work-order documentation, time records, and expenses using tablets, smartphones, and electronic systems.
- Obtain materials, replacement parts, and supplies needed to complete assigned work.
- Provide recommendations and estimates for larger repairs or additional facility services when appropriate.
- Communicate professionally with customers, vendors, and internal support teams regarding maintenance needs and work-order status.
- Follow applicable safety procedures, OSHA requirements, building codes, and regulatory standards.
- Participate in required safety and compliance training.
- Participate in an on-call rotation as scheduled.
- Travel locally between assigned customer facilities using a company-provided vehicle.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; HVAC trade school or technical education preferred.
- HVAC technical certification, applicable state license, or equivalent professional training preferred.
- 5+ years of HVAC and/or commercial building maintenance experience preferred.
- Hands-on experience servicing and troubleshooting commercial or industrial HVAC equipment and systems.
- Experience with package units, split systems, boilers, compressors, refrigeration components, and HVAC controls.
- Working knowledge of electrical, plumbing, and general building maintenance.
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical equipment independently.
- Comfortable using smartphones, tablets, and electronic work-order systems.
- Strong communication, customer service, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple service requests.
- EPA Universal Refrigeration Certification required.
- Valid driver's license required.
- Ability to travel locally between customer locations.
- Ability to participate in an on-call rotation.
