We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical Engineer specializing in Substation Engineering to join a dynamic team responsible for delivering engineering and consulting services on projects across the U.S. and internationally. This position is based in St. Louis, MO, with flexibility for remote work and limited travel expectations.
In this role, you'll lead engineering design efforts for both protection & control systems and physical substation layouts, spanning a wide range of voltage classes—from small distribution upgrades to large transmission facilities.
You’ll work on complex, high-impact projects that directly influence the reliability, resilience, and efficiency of the electric grid. This is a hands-on technical role within an agile, multi-disciplinary team that supports projects from greenfield development to retrofit implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead design and execution of high-voltage substation projects (13kV – 500kV).
- Design physical substation components: yard layouts, grounding, lightning protection, control buildings, raceways, and AC/DC power systems.
- Develop protection & control deliverables: one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, and relay panel layouts.
- Prepare proposals, conceptual designs, project scopes, and execution plans.
- Estimate engineering cost, labor hours, and create schedules.
- Conduct engineering studies and calculations (grounding, lightning protection, load analysis).
- Write equipment specifications and participate in FATs (Factory Acceptance Tests).
- Collaborate across disciplines (civil/structural, transmission line, networks).
- Mentor junior engineers and review technical deliverables.
- Provide occasional field support during construction phases.
- Support business development, proposals, and client engagement.
- Engage in specialized efforts such as relay settings, 3D/intelligent design, or industry committees.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
OR a Bachelor’s in Engineering Technology + FE certification.
OR a Master’s in Electrical Engineering + 2 years of experience. - ~8 years of relevant substation/protection & controls experience (consulting preferred).
- Professional Engineer (PE) license strongly preferred.
- Strong familiarity with industry standards and best practices in substation design.
- Proficient in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and other 2D/3D or electrical modeling tools.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Comfortable working independently and in cross-functional teams.
- Willingness to travel quarterly (~10%).
- Join a 35-person engineering group, broken into 6 project teams of 3–10 people.
- Project durations range from 6 weeks to 18 months (most in the 6–9 month range).
- Collaborative environment working with Project Engineers, PMs, Civil/Structural, and T-Line engineers.
- Involvement spans greenfield and retrofit substation projects.
- Teams often tackle complex and high-profile assignments, offering both challenge and growth.
