Job Summary
The Production Maintenance Technician I is responsible for completing preventive maintenance (PM) tasks and performing repairs on facility equipment as directed by Site Leadership. This role operates within a "flow-to-the-work" environment and requires strong communication, accountability, and follow-through. The ideal candidate demonstrates a proactive, ownership-driven approach to maintenance operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment while adhering to company and customer safety policies.
- Complete required certifications and licensing for equipment operation, including forklifts, scissor lifts, and articulating boom lifts.
- Safely utilize portable ladders and appropriate fall protection equipment.
- Perform preventive maintenance according to written procedures, including:
- Measuring equipment wear
- Replacing worn or defective components (belts, hoses, fluids, filters, etc.)
- Evaluating operating conditions such as speed, pressure, vacuum, and vibration
- Complete assigned work orders and accurately document all work within the CMMS system.
- Perform repairs on facility and process equipment, including:
- Pumps, steam traps, valves, and solenoid devices
- Air, steam, and hydraulic valves and cylinders
- Conduct routine shift inspections ("rounds") using checklists to monitor system performance (e.g., temperatures, pressures, RPMs, operating modes).
- Communicate effectively with site leadership and customer representatives regarding work status, parts requirements, or schedule delays.
- Perform maintenance and repairs within designated process areas.
- Ensure all documentation and paperwork are completed accurately and on time.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred; or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of mechanical experience, including exposure to electrical, plumbing, and carpentry; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Licenses/Certifications
- Valid driver's license required
- Forklift operator certification
- JLG (boom lift) certification
Skills and Competencies
Communication Skills
- Ability to read and understand basic instructions, maintenance manuals, and memos
- Ability to write routine reports and documentation
- Ability to effectively communicate with customers, leadership, and team members
Technical Skills
- Ability to successfully perform all essential job functions
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
- Basic knowledge of mechanical systems and maintenance practices
Physical Demands
- Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands, and communicate (talk/hear)
- Frequent ladder and lift work
- Occasional sitting, reaching, climbing, balancing, and kneeling/crouching
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs regularly and up to 50 lbs occasionally
Work Environment
- Work performed in an industrial environment requiring use of PPE, including:
- Steel-toe boots
- Hearing protection
- Hard hat
- Safety glasses
- Hand protection
- Must follow all OSHA regulations, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and Hazard Communication (HAZCOM) standards
- Work schedule is determined by business needs and contract requirements
- Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure or stressful situations
