Position Overview
This opportunity offers the chance to collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams supporting critical grid infrastructure projects, including overhead transmission lines. The Staff Engineering Technician contributes to the design, analysis, and detailing of structural and transmission components that support complex infrastructure projects.
The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Staff Engineering Technician plays a key role in developing high-quality engineering deliverables for complex transmission projects. Under general supervision, this position performs technical tasks requiring advanced knowledge of engineering principles and practices, with a focus on creating and modifying transmission models, drawings, and details using industry-standard design tools such as PLS-CADD.
This position may provide technical guidance and direction to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project deliverables.
Required Skills- Must have experience with overhead transmission design.
- Must have experience using PLS-CADD.
- Experience functioning in a project engineering technician capacity.
- Ability to develop and modify technical engineering deliverables under general direction.
- Foundational knowledge of engineering principles and established design practices.
- Experience using digital design tools and software, including BIM and/or 3D modeling.
- Ability to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, models, and project deliverables.
- Ability to provide technical guidance to engineering professionals and technicians.
- Apply knowledge of applicable engineering standards, systems, document control requirements, departmental guidelines, and industry codes.
- Review project requirements and determine the appropriate format and content of required engineering deliverables.
- Apply quality assurance practices to engineering deliverables and support continuous improvement and change management initiatives.
- Review design inputs to ensure consistency and accuracy throughout project deliverables.
- Assist in ensuring deliverables comply with applicable project codes, standards, and requirements.
- Apply engineering principles and established design practices to develop moderately complex design concepts and technical deliverables.
- Exercise judgment in interpreting design inputs and making decisions related to technical deliverables.
- Handle complex technical assignments within an area of expertise and provide technical guidance to other professionals.
- Perform design calculations, detailed material quantity takeoffs, estimates, and related documentation.
- Review technical deliverables prepared by other team members as needed.
- Define work assignments and maintain project schedules when required.
- Coordinate with other design disciplines and project team members to exchange information necessary for design development.
- Support field activities as needed.
- Maintain a strong understanding of internal project needs while considering client priorities and project objectives.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, design tools, and engineering processes and share knowledge with project teams.
- Contribute to the development and delivery of accurate, high-quality engineering documentation.
- Diploma or certificate required.
- Associate degree in Drafting, Engineering Design Technology, or a related field preferred.
- Typically, a minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
- Experience with overhead transmission line design and PLS-CADD is required.
