As a Control Systems Engineer II, you will be responsible for the full lifecycle of automation projects, including control system design, PLC programming, HMI/SCADA development, electrical design, equipment installation, and startup support. You'll collaborate with engineering, operations, and maintenance teams to develop new production lines, modernize existing systems, and support automation initiatives across multiple facilities.
This role is highly project-focused and offers the opportunity to work on both new system implementations and modernization efforts. Engineers in this position have significant ownership over their projects and play a direct role in improving manufacturing performance and operational reliability.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and implement industrial automation and control systems
- Program and configure Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLC platforms using ladder logic
- Develop and maintain HMI and SCADA applications, including Ignition and FactoryTalk environments
- Create electrical schematics, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and control cabinet designs
- Support equipment upgrades, controls retrofits, and new production line installations
- Participate in system startup, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting activities
- Design and support industrial networks, communications, and system integration
- Manage project activities including budgeting, vendor coordination, contractor oversight, and equipment procurement
- Collaborate with process engineers, maintenance teams, and plant operations to identify and implement automation improvements
- Provide technical guidance and support for manufacturing facilities as needed
- Ensure projects meet safety, quality, and performance standards
Travel Requirements:
- Approximately 30% travel on average
- Travel may increase to as much as 50% during installation and startup phases of major projects
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Automation Engineering, or related technical discipline; equivalent experience may be considered
- 2-7 years of controls engineering, automation engineering, or related industrial experience
- Strong experience programming Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs, including ControlLogix, SLC, or PLC-5 platforms
- Experience with ladder logic programming and industrial automation systems
- HMI/SCADA development experience, preferably with Ignition and/or FactoryTalk
- Experience creating electrical schematics and panel designs using SolidWorks Electrical, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar platforms
- Knowledge of Ethernet/IP communications and industrial networking fundamentals
- Experience supporting capital projects, equipment upgrades, or new system implementations
- Understanding of manufacturing processes and plant-floor operations
- Strong troubleshooting, analytical, and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to manage projects independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with variable frequency drives (VFDs) and motor controls
- Knowledge of industrial power distribution systems
- Python scripting experience
- SQL/database query experience
- Experience in manufacturing environments such as plastics, food & beverage, pharmaceuticals, automotive, robotics, batch processing, or process manufacturing
- Experience leading automation projects from concept through commissioning
