The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Staff Engineering Technician, under general supervision, performs advanced functions requiring technical knowledge and the use of electronic applications, standards, and document control processes in support of creating or modifying deliverables. This role will be responsible for the development of site drainage, grading, and utility plans using Autodesk Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation.
This role will support distributed infrastructure projects, including client needs related to Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. Advanced Civil 3D experience is required, including the use of proposed grading surfaces and plan development.
Job Summary
- Functions in a project engineering technician capacity
- Under general direction, supports engineering and design teams by developing and modifying technical deliverables
- Applies foundational engineering principles and established design practices to create moderately complex design concepts and solutions
- Utilizes digital tools and design software (e.g., CAD, BIM, 3D modeling) to create, modify, and maintain technical documentation, drawings, and project deliverables
- Provides technical guidance and may offer direction to other engineering professionals and technicians to ensure quality and consistency across project outputs
Key Responsibilities
- Applies knowledge of standards, systems, document control practices, departmental guidelines, and applicable codes
- Reviews project requirements and determines the appropriate format and content for deliverables
- Ensures deliverables are accurate and compliant with quality standards; supports continuous improvement and change management efforts
- Reviews design inputs to ensure consistency and compliance with applicable codes and standards
- Applies engineering principles and established design practices to develop moderately complex design concepts and deliverables
- Exercises judgment in interpreting inputs and making decisions related to deliverables
- Handles complex technical assignments within area of expertise and provides guidance to other team members
- Performs design calculations, material quantity takeoffs, and estimates
- Reviews the work of others as needed
- Assists with defining work assignments and maintaining project schedules
- Coordinates with other design team members to exchange information necessary for design development
- May support field activities
- Focuses on internal stakeholder needs while understanding external client drivers
- Proactively seeks and shares knowledge of emerging technologies and processes
Required Skills
- Advanced experience with Autodesk Civil 3D, including pipe/pressure networks, proposed grading surfaces, and plan and profile development
- Strong understanding of plan & profile drawings, alignments, pipe networks, and grading
- Typically a minimum of 5 years of related work experience
Technical Skills
- Autodesk Civil 3D
- Autodesk AutoCAD
- Bluebeam
- Experience with electronic applications and programs used for engineering design and documentation (e.g., CADD or similar tools)
- Ability to interpret engineering deliverables and drawings
- Working knowledge of engineering standards, systems, document control practices, and departmental guidelines
- General understanding of industry technologies and trends
- Basic knowledge of construction practices and design principles
- Familiarity with multidisciplinary coordination
Education
- Diploma or Certificate preferred
- Associate Degree in Drafting or Engineering Design Technology preferred
