The Planet Group is currently seeking an Electrical Engineer III – Distribution Design for a growing company in the electrical utilities engineering industry. Qualified candidates must have underground distribution design experience and ideally be well-rounded in both distribution and substation engineering. Apply now for immediate consideration.
Job Description
The Electrical Engineer III – Distribution Design is responsible for designing sub-transmission systems, substations, switching stations, and commercial/industrial power distribution systems. The role supports a growing office in Corona, CA, specifically serving Moreno Valley Utilities with additional work supporting sites nationwide.
You will join a close-knit engineering team within a company known for having a family environment, strong ownership of projects, and hands-on involvement from concept through installation. Because the company owns and operates many of the sites, engineers are deeply involved and gain full-cycle project visibility.
Job Duties & Responsibilities:
-
Assist in designing sub-transmission systems, substations, switching stations, and commercial/industrial power distribution systems.
-
Develop concept design alternatives, engineering calculations, power system analysis, and engineering estimates for small-scale system improvement projects.
-
Create, update, and maintain GIS databases for large-scale electrical distribution networks.
-
Perform site surveys for new utility service requests; develop and present design alternatives to leadership and customers.
-
Support Lead Engineers on major capital upgrade projects.
-
Analyze electrical fault events, power quality issues, and system loading scenarios; assist with corrective action implementation.
-
Gain and maintain intermediate knowledge of power system protection and relaying schemes.
-
Create system models in ETAP (or similar software) and run power system studies.
-
Schedule and attend field walk-downs with customers to gather and confirm project requirements.
Additional Role Context:
-
Office is expanding—Corona location will grow from 2 engineers to ~5 by January.
-
Work focuses heavily on underground distribution design, a key requirement.
-
Company culture is collaborative with weekly catered lunches and regular team events.
-
Engineers are expected to be well-rounded—not siloed—handling multiple aspects of electrical power systems.
Requirements
-
BS Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university (Power Systems emphasis preferred).
-
5–8 years of electrical engineering experience.
-
Underground Distribution design experience strongly preferred.
-
Experience in medium-voltage electrical substations and distribution systems.
-
Knowledge of power system analysis, distribution system modeling, and protective device coordination.
-
Experience with ETAP or similar modeling software.
-
PE License strongly preferred.
-
Must be a U.S. Citizen (required for military site access).
-
Valid driver’s license.
-
Ability to obtain Military Base Security Access Clearance.
-
Willingness to travel up to 20%, including occasional out-of-state travel for projects.
