Roles & Responsibilities
- The position will be assigned to a large, multi-year transmission vegetation management project.
- The ideal candidate will have recent environmental field compliance and construction oversight background, with focused experience on overhead and underground electric transmission projects, relating to working in and near wetlands and water bodies and other resources.
- The individual will be responsible for assessing compliance with environmental permits and approvals issued by various Federal, State, and local regulatory agencies, and the appropriate implementation of erosion and sedimentation best management practices.
- Working knowledge of New England environmental regulations, particularly relevant Connecticut permit compliance is key to this position.
- The position is primarily a field position involving the monitoring of clearing activities and contractors completing the work.
- It requires a general knowledge and familiarity with working outdoors (e.g., walking over uneven or saturated ground), exposure to various types of weather and other outdoor phenomena such as ticks, stinging insects and winter weather conditions), the ability to safely operate a 4WD pickup truck (which can be provided on a limited basis only) and working around heavy construction equipment.
- Travel throughout CT and possibly western MA will be required daily.
- The individual will be required to complete daily field inspection reports in a timely manner using project specific processes.
- This position may also require time in the office assembling documents, correspondence, schedules, and additional project deliverables; and may require supporting the development of permit amendments, reports, regulatory submissions and various levels of data analysis.
- Provide ongoing monitoring (spot checking) of vegetation management activities at project locations to verify compliance with environmental requirements and accepted erosion and sedimentation BMPs.
- Maintain an understanding of the permit/environmental compliance requirements.
- Utilize GIS and other mapping devices while in the field.
- Communicate and reinforce project permit/environmental compliance requirements and expectations to the contractor and field personnel.
- Document permit/environmental compliance inspection results using accepted daily field reporting and photographing project activities.
- Track open environmental compliance punch-list items.
- Review completed work in the field with utility arborists and/or oversight staff, as necessary.
- Participate in pre-clearing walk-through with contractor and team prior to the start of work.
- Provide various T&E species trainings for the contractor prior to the start of work.
- Participate in weekly Project status conference calls as requested to discuss permit/environmental compliance.
- Communicate compliance issues and field observations to the contractor and utility staff when on site.
- Approximately reflag previously delineated wetland areas, T&E species locations and/or cultural resource sites to facilitate completion of the necessary work.
- Communicate/coordinate with resource specific monitors (e.g. T&E species biologists) that are required by agency approvals.
- Bachelor's degree in environmental science/biology or related science field, with 2 - 5 years prior experience in environmental compliance monitoring, environmental surveys and studies. Individuals with CPESC® and/or CESSWI ™ certifications are strongly preferred.
- Wetland and watercourse delineation (including vernal pools) and plant, particularly T&E species, identification are a plus, but not required.
- Excellent organizational and written & verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work well as part of a project team and ability to travel. Strong health and safety awareness.
- Leadership and management skills.
