Job Description


PAY: $50-70/hr 

Our client is currently looking for a Senior Fire Protection Engineer to provide Fire Protection Engineering design support services to support Design-Bid-Build and Design-Build projects and associated efforts undertaken by the NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic program, at Norfolk Naval Station.

Job Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide independent, timely, and professional fire protection engineering support, services, and consultation for the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of facilities for the Navy, Marine Corps, and other supported commands. Responsibilities include minor works projects, specific projects, special projects, military construction (MILCON), demolition, maintenance, space utilization, and facilities development.
  • Participate in conferences with project stakeholders and collaborate with other engineering and architectural disciplines to ensure system coordination and integration with project-specific requirements.
  • Typical projects include fire protection engineering services addressing life safety, type of construction, height and area requirements, separation distances, fire-rated construction, spray-applied fireproofing, firestopping, sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, mass notification systems, clean agent fire suppression systems, base-wide fire alarm reporting systems, water distribution systems, hydraulic analysis, fire modeling, and performance-based designs of significant size and complexity for government facilities such as multi-story office buildings, steam plants, hospitals, housing, manufacturing, training centers, and similar structures.

Key Qualifications
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the discipline of Fire Protection Engineering is required.
  • Substantial professional knowledge and practical application of fire protection engineering concepts, theories, principles, practices, and techniques are necessary to plan, design, construct, and maintain a wide range of shore-based engineering projects.
  • Knowledge of DoD and Navy guide specifications, criteria, and policy, as well as industry codes and standards and standard practices related to fire protection engineering design, including the Unified Facilities Criteria (UFC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) codes and standards, International Building Code (IBC), International Mechanical Code (IMC), International Residential Code (IRC), FM Global Loss Prevention Data Sheets, the Society of Fire Protection Engineers Handbook, and other applicable industry standards.
  • Knowledge of local, state, federal, and foreign country laws, codes, and statutory requirements affecting fire protection engineering design throughout the NAVFAC Mid-Atlantic area of responsibility.
  • Knowledge of related architectural and engineering fields and their associated impacts as related to fire protection engineering design, along with the ability to make oral presentations of proposed designs and results of studies.
  • Knowledge and experience with Autodesk software, Microsoft Office products, fire protection engineering design and analysis software, and other applicable DoD computer systems and software used by the Command.
  • Ability to produce results of analysis in writing, consolidate findings of others, and evaluate recommendations and facts.
  • Knowledge of budgeting, planning, and project management techniques, including the ability to coordinate the work of others and lead teams.
  • Knowledge of and full compliance with Safety Policy and Guidance, including the use of personal protective equipment.

Experience & Education
  • Experience: A minimum of ten years of professional fire protection engineering code-compliant facilities design experience for new construction, including renovation design experience, is required.
  • Education: Completion of a course of study accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) in a fire protection engineering program from a college or university, leading to a bachelor’s or master’s degree in mechanical engineering or fire protection engineering, supplemented by substantial hands-on facilities design experience, is required. If the degree is in mechanical engineering, a PE registration in the discipline of Fire Protection Engineering is required.
