Job Title: Protection & Controls Engineer

Location: 525 S Tryon St, Charlotte, NC 28202 (Hybrid – 3 days/week in office)

Salary Range: $56 – $70/hour

Duration: 12 months (contract)

Introduction
We are seeking an experienced Protection & Controls Engineer to join the Transmission team in Charlotte, NC. This role focuses on engineering conceptual design, protection system studies, settings development, and troubleshooting for substation protection systems. The ideal candidate will have extensive utility industry experience, familiarity with protective relaying software and compliance standards, and strong expertise in both electromechanical and microprocessor-based protection systems.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • 15+ years of discipline experience, with SME-level technical knowledge

  • Proven experience in the utility industry

  • Familiarity with Aspen Relay Database, Aspen OneLiner, CymTCC, SEL-5010, and SEL-5030 AcSELerator software

  • Understanding of NERC Compliance Standards (PRC-006, PRC-023, PRC-025, PRC-026, PRC-027, CIP-010, CIP-002, FAC-008)

  • Strong knowledge of electromechanical, solid-state, and microprocessor-based relaying

  • Familiarity with relay protection schemes and logic (Transmission Line, Bus, Transformer, Breaker Failure, Capacitors, etc.)

  • Excellent technical communication skills, both written and verbal

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with QA review of OLRs and protection system settings

  • Knowledge of developing, implementing, and maintaining protective device settings templates

  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams (Account Management, Transmission Planning, Distribution, System Performance, etc.)

  • Background supporting capital project work in a transmission or utility environment

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Perform conceptual design, studies, calculations, and settings development for substation protection systems

  • Manage and respond to protection system settings tasks in the team’s planner tool

  • Provide support for transmission capital projects, including QA of OLRs and system settings

  • Develop, implement, and maintain protective device settings templates (transmission line, transformer, bus, capacitor protection, etc.)

  • Troubleshoot and provide technical support for protection systems

  • Prepare technical reports, correspondence, calculations, and documentation related to protection and control engineering

  • Support compliance with NERC standards through settings reviews and updates

  • Develop positive working relationships across internal teams to ensure timely resolution of requests

  • Represent the company professionally while supporting business goals and operational reliability
