Job Description
PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The Process and Control Systems Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing complex automation systems, electrical systems, processes and production systems for production facilities. Position analyzes, designs, codes, installs, tests, modifies, and maintains computer controls hardware, programs, software interfaces and applications in a process control environment. In addition, position oversees and conducts operators’, mechanics’, and supervisors’ trainings on newly installed processing systems. As a subject area expert, the Process and Control Systems Engineer serves as a leader in determining long-term process controls strategy.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
This position reports to the Engineering Manager. The position works closely with plant staff, research and development, engineering, contractors, and vendors.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (The essential functions listed below are not intended to reflect all duties that may be assigned to this position. It is the responsibility of every employee to report food safety and food quality problems or risks to personnel with the authority to initiate action against these said possible risks. Company has identified personnel that will serve as backups for key personnel in the event that said employee is absent or unavailable. These provisions can be found within the organizational chart. Tree Top may augment duties, including essential functions, at its discretion.)
Research, develop, write, and install complex applications, programs, and modifications in process control systems, including: PID controls, cascade controls, multi-controller outputs to high and low signal select functions to final control elements, feed forward, and function generator configurations. Work with screen development, graphics standards and management, dynamic graphic element configuration for process controls, alarm management, and trending in HMI and SCADA applications. Collect data on computerized process control systems and troubleshoot and resolve identified problems. Perform Ethernet Network configurations for industrial control applications, including IP address management and network diagram creation and/or editing.
Maintain and program plant SCADA, historians and alarm dialing systems.
Consult with contractors and consultants on capital improvement projects and plant expansions. Interpret equipment and plant issues and recommend best practices. Oversee modifications to current systems and plant expansions; design, code, and implement new programs; review the work of contractors to assure contract provisions are being met; and oversee resources needed to achieve the project schedule and commitment.
Manage and lead projects by taking responsibility and ownership of all aspects of the project. Develop scopes of work for given projects; estimate resource requirements for defined scope; and ensure that the programming specifications for a given project are met. Provide data mapping requirements for industrial control applications, and create “interface control documents” (ICD’s) that provides data mapping between systems, as needed.
Develop new and analyze existing process control systems to optimize function and to improve and correct deficiencies in the initial design. Serve as a resource and mentor to plant control technicians by providing support and guidance on implementing system improvements. Provide operator retraining to effectively implement changes.
Implement process equipment commissioning to ensure design, operation, and budget expectations are met.
Design and/or develop new processes and utility systems as required by company needs and project assignments.
Design, implement and document power systems for Tree Top facilities and processes.
Have regular attendance and work appropriate number of hours to get the essential functions completed.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY:
KNOWLEDGE OF:
In-depth working knowledge of various manufacturers, PLC and HMI hardware and software application.
Understanding of NFPA 70 National Electrical Code, NFPA 70E and effectively implement electrical projects using this code.
Working knowledge of process control systems including instrumentation and process control hardware, software, and methods.
Understand food processing, thermal systems, CIP systems, and packaging.
Knowledge of graphic arts.
Low voltage wiring, facility power distribution, electrical and controls panel wiring, instrumentation functionality.
Principles and practices of complex program and project development and administration.
Principles and practices of process and equipment design.
Principles and practices of construction management.
Principles and practices of electrical, mechanical or chemical engineering and their application to food manufacturing facilities.
Pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
ABILITY TO:
Manage and coordinate a variety of complex projects.
Ability to design and execute extremely complex PLC and SCADA programs, including analyzing, designing, coding, testing, and debugging.
Ability to troubleshoot industrial processes.
Gain cooperation through discussion and persuasion.
Identify, research, and analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, and project consequences of proposed actions.
Understand and interpret specifications, maps, plans, and reports pertaining to complex capital improvement projects and plant expansions.
Effectively organize, plan, and execute.
Use computers and computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, PLCs, HMD, and SCADA programs.
Meet behaviors established in Tree Top’s performance management and development process.
Use computers and computer software including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and AutoCAD.
EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATION/LICENSES, AND TRAINING:
A Bachelor’s degree in electrical, process, controls engineering, or related field is preferred, with a minimum of 8 years of experience.
Alternatively, a minimum of 12 years of experience performing system integration, project management, PLC/HMI development programming, process engineering, control systems engineering, or related.
Solid understanding of liquid and dry solids process engineering principles.
Strong engineering project management experience.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Constantly works in an office or manufacturing/plant environment and occasionally has exposures to a lab or outdoors environment
Occasionally deals with highly confidential information
Constantly works under tight time constraints or with business activities of a seasonal/cyclical nature
Occasionally travels, including overnight stays, to other worksites, for off-site meetings, and for training purposes
Occasionally works with dissatisfied or angry customers
Physical requirements of the job:
Constantly lifts up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts up to 50 pounds
Vision requirements: Frequently uses near vision and depth perception, and occasionally uses far vision and color vision
Constantly talks, types, uses repetitive hand motions, and/or sits
Types of exposures encountered in the job: Frequently has exposures to loud machine or electrical current and occasionally has exposures to odors or fumes or extreme heat/cold temperatures
