Job Summary:

Our next Histology Technician III will be required to perform, but not limited to: the preparation of quality

tissue samples for histopathologic evaluation; identification of tissue samples for proper embedding

orientation; tissue processing for paraffin and plastic/resin tissue samples; microtomy skills for routine

paraffin and plastic/resin tissue samples; preparation of reagents and the performance of routine

hematoxylin and eosin (H&E), special histochemical staining and manual/automated

immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures; performs and analyzes method development and validation of

antibody protocols for IHC procedures; performs quality control procedures on all prepared microscopic

slides; knowledge of the use and maintenance of equipment used for the preparation of tissue samples

and the ability to maintain a clean and orderly laboratory environment. Training and overseeing laboratory

personnel training is required.

Responsibilities:

• Maintains and documents the use and maintenance of laboratory equipment

• Maintains a safe, clean and orderly laboratory environment

• Performs paraffin tissue processing and bone decalcification procedures

• Identifies required tissue sample orientation and performs paraffin embedding procedures.

• Performs plastic/resin tissue processing and embedding procedures

• Uses microtomy skills in the preparation of routine (paraffin embedded) and plastic/resin

microscopic slides according to standard operating procedures and/or required by study protocols

• Prepares reagents/stains and performs routine hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining as well as

cover slipping microscopic slides

• Prepares reagents/stains and performs special histochemical staining procedures to emphasize

particular tissue elements and analyses tissue samples used as positive/negative controls

• Prepares reagents and antibody dilutions for use in immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures

• Performs and analyzes method development and validation of antibody protocols necessary for

immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures

• Performs both manual and automated immunohistochemistry (IHC) procedures

• Performs quality control procedures on all prepared microscope slides

• Troubleshoots equipment and/or operation failures and takes appropriate actions to keep

interruptions to a minimum

• Analyzes raw data collection and solves for deviation in standard operating procedures (SOP)

and/or protocol requirements

• Trains and oversee laboratory personnel during training procedures.

• Delegates tasks to laboratory personnel

• Additional tasks pertaining to warehouse ordering of supplies and data entry to laboratory

inventory records may be assigned

• Additional tasks pertaining to the disposition of hazardous chemical, generation of the hazardous

chemical lab pack and data entry to the laboratory hazardous chemical records may be assigned

• Additional training pertaining to special necropsy tissue collection and/or organ weights may be

required and assigned

• Additional training pertaining to necropsy processing procedures may be assigned

• Additional training pertaining to supervisory and leadership skills may be assigned

Requirements:

• Associate’s Degree (AA), specializing in sciences preferred

• The work experience required includes, but not limited to at least 5 years of histology experience

and at least 1 year of immunohistochemistry experience

• Preferred HT (ASCP), HTL (ASCP) or QIHC (ASCP), but not required

• The computer skills required includes, but not limited to: the ability to utilize Microsoft Office.

• The language skills required includes, but not limited to: proficiency in both written and verbal

English, the ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and

maintenance instructions, study documents and standard operation procedures; the ability to

write standard operating procedures, the ability to effectively communicate information and

respond to questions from directors/managers

• The math skills required includes, but not limited to: the ability to utilize basic math skills for

preparation of reagents

• The training requirements include, but not limited to: the HTIII Personnel Training and

Qualitfication Matrix. Continual GLP training

• Additional skills required includes, but not limited to: general reading, writing and oral

communication skills

• Identification of tissue organs and/or tissue samples; microtomy skills, routine H&E staining,

special histochemical staining, immunohistochemistry procedures, paraffin and plastic/resin

tissue processing preferred

• Handles and disposes biological and/or chemical substances and wastes in accordance with

applicable policies and procedures

• Wears appropriate PPE in accordance with policies and procedures. PPE may include, but is not

limited to: N-95 respirator, face mask, safety glasses, goggles, face shield, gloves, and lab coat

• Ability to work overtime, holidays, weekends, and evening h
