Job Description


Pay: $90-100/hr

Overview:

A Human Factors Engineer is needed to support the major Digital Instrumentation and Control (I&C) modernization program for Client Company's Nuclear Power Stations. The Digital I&C project is a 10+ year effort as part of Subsequent License Renewal (SLR) to upgrade safety and non-safety-related analog systems to digital and transform the main control room to flat panel displays and controls. This role works with a cross-functional team of HFE peers, design engineers, station stakeholders, and project leads to evaluate changes to the main control room and other areas of the facility and how the operator interacts with the new digital control systems.

  1. Preferred current knowledge of industry guidance (Mil Standard, IEEE, ISA or HFES), federal regulation 10CFR50.34(f)(2)(ii) and (iii), NRC Orders relating to Generic Letter 82-33 and NUREG-0737 Supplement 1, and guidance documents including NUREG-0800 Chapters 7, 13 and 18, NUREG-0711 and NUREG-0700 applicable to commercial nuclear operations.
  2. Familiarity with Microsoft Visio, NavisWorks, CREATE, CORYS ThunderEdit, Emerson Ovation Graphics Builder or other commercial 2D data visualization and control software or 3D design software
  3. Experience with human computer interaction and graphical display user interfaces development, design and testing.
  4. Must have familiarity in working in nuclear power industry and/or process plant environments such as defense or aviation industry

  • Strong communication skills both verbal and written
  • Ability to lead, collaborate, or work effectively in a variety of teams, including multi-disciplinary teams
Responsibilities include,
  • Developing prototypical graphical and analog human system interfaces to digital I&C systems (rapid prototyping) providing interface to approximately 120 process/support systems of an existing Nuclear Power Generating Station
  • Supporting development, deployment, and maintenance of 3D models in support of Human Factors program activities
  • Participating in Human Factors program activities in support of the project (e.g., functional requirements analysis and function allocation, task analysis, user interface design and evaluation, and other Human Factors Engineering evaluations)
  • Reviewing Design / Engineering Change documentation and changes to Human Factors Engineering requirements, guidance, and documentation
  • Supporting activities for Simulation, Procedure and Training changes, Factory and Site Acceptance Testing, Implementation, Post Modification Testing, and Design / Engineering Change Closure
  • Partnering with the project’s internal and external groups and station stakeholders, including Operations, I&C, Training, and about 10 other departmental work groups
  • Maintaining consistency and compliance with Client Company and industry standards
  • Identifying and elevating risks in human factors engineering work
  • Achieving and maintaining qualification under Client Company's program for HFE
  • Reporting status to project managers on a periodic basis
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience
  • Knowledge of relevant computer application (e.g. 2D and 3D drawing/modeling tools, etc.) with the ability to manipulate personal computer applications and perform engineering calculations using applicable software programs
  • Knowledge of engineering theories and principles
  • Good individual contributor skills with proven ability to serve as project team member
  • Strong oral and written communication skills (includes technical writing)
  • Strong personal computer skills
  • Ability to think analytically and solve complex problems
  • Ability to understand codes, regulations and practices
  • Ability to work effectively independently or in team environment
  • Ability to process information quickly and effectively manage multiple tasks
  • Ability to organize and plan assigned tasks
Required Years of Experience:
  • 2 to 5 years or more relevant experience in user, human-computer or human-system interface design In nuclear or safety sensitive industries
Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Factors Engineering, Engineering Psychology, or related science or certificate or coursework in human factors engineering
Industry Experience
  • MUST have background or experience in Systems Engineering, Operations or Operations Training in the nuclear industry or defense/aviation industry
