Job Purpose:

The main function of the role is to manage and reduce the company' s SF6 (greenhouse gas) emissions. Manage all Federal, State and company SF6 emissions reporting to meet or exceed our internal goals. Provide Substation Electrical Equipment technical expertise and support to Substation Construction, Engineering and Asset Management groups to maintain reliability and deliver long-term sustainability of substation assets. The candidate will develop an understanding of the Substation Maintenance Standards & Procedures to meet our internal and external requirements. The role will take on more complex aspects of high voltage circuit breakers and GIS operating requirements including design reviews, factory inspections, and acceptance testing to support substation projects and system strategic spare requirements for successful completion of the company' s maintenance and construction work plans.

Key Accountabilities:
  • Supervise all SF6 handling to include filling of new SF6 gas insulated equipment (GIE), degassing of all retired SF6 GIE, and topping off all SF6 GIE.
  • Identify SF6 leaks during top-offs, receive repair materials, schedule outages and manpower, and supervise SF6 gas cart operation, repair procedures, refilling and testing.
  • Troubleshoot and locate SF6 leaks using the FLIR Camera and other techniques
  • Prioritize and determine whether to replace or repair leaking SF6 equipment to support our emissions goal and reduce costs.
  • Supervise the maintenance and repair of all SF6 gas handling equipment including gas carts
  • Maintain necessary spare parts to prevent delay of leak repairs
  • Prepare SF6 reporting data for quarterly internal reporting, annual internal, federal and state reporting
  • Manage a single site for SF6 cylinder storage for each geographic area
  • Work with various Substation groups, such as Procurement, Contractors and undertake specific tasks of varying complexity to support colleagues for construction, maintenance, and emergency substation requirements related to SF6 filled equipment.
  • Work closely with manufacturers, vendors, other utilities in the development of alternative SF6 solutions such as circuit breakers, circuit switchers and GIS
  • Maintain an understanding of the Substation Maintenance Standards & Procedures, Engineering Documents, and Computerized Maintenance Management System (CASCADE)
  • Provide recommendation to engineers for the improvement and safety by design of substations based on working practices identified in the field, failure investigations, service or product advisories, and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and mandated requirements to meet standards and safety requirements in-line with company policies and processes
  • Working knowledge of regulations and internal standards (e.g. IEEE, EEI, ANSI, NESC, NEC, EPA, SMS, SMP, etc.) is preferred
  • Evaluate substation equipment failures, prepare, and publish substation equipment failure/trouble reports as necessary
  • Assist engineers by monitoring and challenging business processes in order to ensure company is compliant with industry associations (e.g. IEEE, EEI, ANSI, etc.)
  • Challenge existing ways of working and continuously seek ways to do things better to drive greater efficiencies within assigned area

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor' s degree in Engineering or Technology from an ABET accredited engineering school
  • Experience working in a Substation environment with a minimum of 5 years of related experience
  • Knowledge of Substation Gas Circuit Breakers and GIS function, maintenance, testing and repairs
  • Knowledge of utilities business operations, company policies and practices is preferred
  • Knowledge of relevant industry practices, standards and legislation is preferred
  • Willingness to travel regionally with occasional overnight
  • Good communication skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office products
